Kelso Country Churches (Church of Scotland) – Charity no SC000958

We welcome you to our church and are glad that you have come to us for your wedding. We hope that you have an enjoyable day and that all your preparations run smoothly. This leaflet has been prepared to give you some information to help you in your preparations.

Before a minister can marry a couple, a marriage schedule needs to be obtained which needs to be at the church on the day. A marriage schedule can be obtained by going to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and getting the necessary forms to fill in. These have to be sent in at least six weeks before the wedding. In the week before the wedding you need to return to that office to get the marriage schedule. Without the marriage schedule, which is the legal document signed as part of the ceremony, no marriage can be performed.

As part of the ceremony music can be played by an organist that the minister will organise or other musicians that you may arrange. Advice on suitable classical pieces of music can be given and/or hymns that you may wish to sing. There is a charge for the organist of £100 (£200 if a video recording is being made).

There is no charge for the services of the minister but there is a charge for use of the church of £300.00. Church and organist’s fees are payable within 30 days of the wedding, but most couples prefer to pay them at the rehearsal, a day or two before the service itself. If paying for the use of the church by cheque please make it payable to “Kelso Country Churches (Church of Scotland)”.

You may wish to produce an order of service for the ceremony but church hymn books are also available. It is also possible to display hymns and photos on a powerpoint screen. The usual order of service for the ceremony will be provided but other things can be added in discussion with the minister.

A rehearsal for the ceremony can be arranged to take place sometime in the week before the service.

I hope this leaflet will be of help to you as you prepare for this very important day. I pray that God will greatly bless you in your preparations and in your future life together.

‘and I pray that Christ will make his home in your hearts through faith. I pray that you may have your roots and foundation in love,’

Ephesians 3.17

Many people look forward to having children after they are married and sometimes wish to return to the church in which they were married to have their children baptised.

While there is no requirement for either party getting married to be a member of a church before they can get married in a church, there is a requirement for one or both parents to be involved in the life of the church before a child can be baptised. The minister would be happy to talk to you about the steps towards making a membership commitment.

Our church also does a blessing service for babies where there is no membership requirement. At this service the parents take vows of parenting. The child is named, blessed and prayed for and is presented to the whole congregation who are asked to pray for the child as he/she grows up.

The minister will be happy to explain these services in more detail.
